R22, once the most common refrigerant in home AC units, is being phased out due to its harmful effects on the ozone layer and its high global warming potential (GWP). By 2030, all HCFC production and consumption will be banned in many countries under the Montreal Protocol. So, what’s next?
Alternatives include:
R410A: Widely used, non-toxic, non-flammable, but with a high GWP (1730). It's efficient but will eventually be replaced by lower GWP options.
R32: A promising, low GWP refrigerant (675) that’s already gaining traction in Europe and Japan. It’s just as efficient as R410A, but more eco-friendly.
R290 (Propane): A natural refrigerant with an extremely low GWP (20) and great energy efficiency, though it’s flammable and requires special safety precautions.
Looking ahead: The refrigerant industry is moving toward more sustainable, climate-friendly options.
